BMW has pulled the wraps off the new 3-Series in Munich. At the first glance it may not be impressive, but BMW has revived the 3-Series by making some imperative tweaks to keep up with the competition up in the market. BMW showed a saloon and touring model in Munich to rival models like Jaguar XE and the upcoming Audi A4.
BMW has powered the 3-Series with a new engine line-up, where 3-cylinder petrol engine with turbocharger and a frugal plug-in hybrid 330e will lead the 3-Series for the first time.
Under the bonnet, lots more has been changed to its newest versions. A new engine line-up has received a complete overhaul. It has the lowest possible carbon emissions with on average decrease of 13 per cent on every engine used in the 3-Series.
The 3-cylinder engine is a vital addition in the 3-Series and the new 318i will get the 3-cylinder TwinPower engine, borrowed from MINI. It will be an entry level engine from 2015 with a power output of 134bhp and torque of 220Nm. Carbon emissions are a bit higher than expected and 119g/km of carbon emissions were recorded while testing.
The new plug-in hybrid 330e will go on sale next year according to the BMW officials. It will emit only 49g/km of carbon footprints and return 134.5mpg to make it fuel economical and tax free. The interior also receives a list of subtly styling tweaks.
BMW 3-Series has to face a new rival this year, it is the Jaguar XE saloon with massive styling tweaks inside and outside. BMW 3-Series has only restyled headlights and taillights, small bumpers, extended grille which now meets the headlamps. A full LED lights package is an option while the rear LED lights are offered as standard.
BMW claims that the new 3-Series will be offered as an executive saloon where build quality and dynamics have gone one step forward. It uses a range of quality materials with high-gloss and chromed trims to offer a premium saloon feel. Satellite navigation is offered as standard on all models. The new sat nav system has a faster software to get instant updates. It offers free over-the-air mapping and 4G connectivity.
