All new BMW X5 petrol-electric features an X5 xDrive40e technology, featuring 111bhp electric powertrain. It is gearing up for its world premiere at the New York motor show next month. Last year, a prototype of this new petrol-electric vehicle was caught testing at BMW’s Miramas test track in France.
An electric powered X5 runs on a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder BMW engine which returns 242bhp of power and 258lb-ft of torque. This engine works in combination with the electric motor. Electric motor is fitted at the front of eight speed transmission which returns 111bhp of electric power and 184lb-ft of torque
Altogether, this system of BMW produces a collective power output of 309bhp and 332lb-ft, which is 55bhp more, but it has 81lb-ft lesser torque than its fellow 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel X5 xDrive30d. This electric system uses a lithium-ion battery – consisting of 96-cell structure – as the power source. The rear end of the battery pack has a 150-litre boot space comparative to existing Hybrid versions from the third generation of X5 and a further 500 litre boot space can be added by folding the rear seats.
The X5 refined battery pack has a charging time of 2hrs and 45 minutes when connected to the 3.5kW wall box. This wall box operates at 16amp and 230V while consuming 3500W amount of energy.
The new X5 xDrive40e clocks 6.8 seconds from zero to 62 miles per hour. It has an electronically controlled maximum speed of 131mph whereas the diesel powered powertrain has similar 0-62mph, but top speed is 143mph. It has an all-electric range of 19 miles at a speed of 75mph.
