Parking in tight parking spaces in multi-storey garages has always been a hectic job but from now on, it will be a piece of cake. Thanks to BMW’s new advanced laser scanning system which will park your car automatically into a free space while you don’t have to be in your car. To get into your car again, just speak into a simple smart watch app and your car will come to your straight away.
BMW is making it public next month at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. BMW is calling it Remote Valet Parking Assistant and the test vehicle is the modified version of i3. There are four state-of-the-art laser scanners which enable the smart on-board computer to continuously scan the surroundings and then apply the autonomous driving functions like propulsion, steering and braking to park the car perfectly. All this will be done by you simply getting out of the car at parking entrance and activating the Remote Valet Parking Assistant app, and it’s done.
This system utilises the millimetre exact digital mapping technology to accurately measure the parking space with the help of the lasers and then detects physical properties of garage along with possible risks like the pedestrians and falsely parked cars.
Wow, this system sounds promising, but does it operate on GPS signals? Because you know these signals and their data is often inaccurate, especially in built up areas. This thought might pop into your head but don’t worry, the best feature of this system is that it does not require GPS signals and any expensive changes to existing parking garages’ infrastructure.
According to the claims made by BMW, Remote Valet Parking Assistant is a combined venture of BMW and German company Continental. The new BMW 7-Series is currently under development and will be the first one to offer Remote Valet Parking Assistant; the launch is scheduled for 2016.
